Cannot start apache2 in Hardy

Asked by Manatsawin Hanmongkolchai

I just upgraded to Hardy with Update manager and X server crashed so when I rebooted, /var /home is not mounted. I mount it and dpkg --configure -a then reboot my system. I found that many services is not started but I can start it but when I start apache2, it doesn't seem to have any errors but pstree|grep apache2 show nothing and /var/log/apache2/error.log and /var/log/syslog show no error. apache2 -X also drop me to the shell with no message.

Hello,

When you reboot, are /var and /home still unmounted? If they aren't, then it's normal that many services fail to start.

Regards

/var and /home is mounted manually by me at the first time, after I run dpkg --configure -a it automatically mounted but apache still fails to start.

The right way to start apache (after you mounterd all volumes !!!) is

/etc/init.d/apache2 start

or apache2ctl start

I already use that but it still not work so I try apache2 -X
also, here is my apache2.conf

#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.1/> for detailed information about
# the directives.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/apache2/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "" will be interpreted by the
# server as "//var/log/apache2/foo.log".
#

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
# mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available
# at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.1/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>);
# you will save yourself a lot of trouble.

# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.

I see nothing special there, just make sure that all directories used there do exist on your hard drive.

Apache2 nevers quits without an error message, that is strange ... If you are used to debugers and system traces, you should try that. I could help you if you give me access to your server , but it could be a security issue for you.

Hello,

A strace shows that:
write(25, "[13-May-2008 19:31:20] PHP Warni"..., 235) = 235
close(25) = 0
open("/var/log/php.log", O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_APPEND|O_LARGEFILE, 0644) = 25
time(NULL) = 1210681880
stat64("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=178, ...}) = 0
write(25, "[13-May-2008 19:31:20] PHP Fatal"..., 98) = 98
close(25) = 0
exit_group(-2) = ?
Process 31440 detached

Apache exits after is writes something in php.log

and php.log says:
[13-May-2008 18:00:39] PHP Fatal error: Unable to start eAccelerator module in Unknown on line 0
[13-May-2008 19:31:20] PHP Warning: [eAccelerator] This build of "eAccelerator" was compiled for PHP version 5.2.3-1ubuntu6.3. Rebuild it for your PHP version (5.2.4-2ubuntu5.1) or download precompiled binaries.
 in Unknown on line 0
[13-May-2008 19:31:20] PHP Fatal error: Unable to start eAccelerator module in Unknown on line 0

So you must upgrade eAccelerator or disable it, when that is done apache should run fine.
