How can I shutdown the apache web server on my Ubuntu 10.x desktop

apache web server is running on desktop
I don't need this running
how can it be shutdown
don't want it restarted on reboot

run:

sudo update-rc.d -f httpd remove

not sure if httpd is the service but that wil make it not start on boot, you can however MANULLY start it if you wish using:

sudo service httpd start

got it done, thanks for directions

actual syntax: sudo update-rc.d apache2 remove to remove from init.d and keep it from being restarted @ boot
sudo service apache2 stop to kill running service

using service --status-all
helped to see actual name I needed to remove
