10.10 Apache not parsing php at all

Asked by redhaint

Been running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit for awhile, no problems with my localhost until yesterday. I went to install a SMF board for some work and instead of loading the php page I got a prompt to save or open the file. I tried some plain php pages with the same results, including a phpinfo. HTML is rendered fine and style sheets are being read, it's just php that refuses to parse. Removed and reinstalled the LAMP stack more than I care with plenty of reboots just for fun. Google has failed me and I'm at wits end trying to get php to parse, any tips? (other than no more alpha or beta releases!)

Apache had this to say about it:

[Thu Sep 30 18:22:11 2010] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] PHP Fatal error: php-gtk: Could not open display in Unknown on line 0

It sounds like you have PHP's GTK module enabled in your php.ini. Try disabling it. (I've never used GTK from PHP, so am not sure of the details, but Google turned up the following):

http://osdir.com/ml/php.gtk+.devel/2008-03/msg00007.html
http://oops.opsat.net/doc/gtk/configure-php.html

Can you help with this problem?
