Amaya 11 fails to install

Asked by BadaBingPC

when I try to run the Ubuntu specific installer from http://www.w3.org/Amaya/User/BinDist.html, the application fails to install.
I've begun a thread with the Amaya list and here's some content that one of the moderators gave me:

I'm not an Ubuntu maintainer (I'm the Debian maintainer of Amaya, though),
but please don't report bugs to the distribution when packages from
another source don't install...

Well, the problem is that he tried to install the package from the w3.org
site, which is different from the one on the Ubuntu repository. The later
is split between arch-dependent and independent data, so in order to
install it you would have to remove amay-data and amaya-doc first.

I don't really know what it means, I've only been using Ubuntu for about a week, but I really like it. I've authored a couple of books on web design software for MS Press (Expression Web) and would like a valid design tool on this Ubuntu machine. I won't quit till I get it installed!

Hi,

You can install amaya by opening synaptic package manager (system->administration->synaptic) and searching for amaya.

Applications in ubuntu should be installed through add/remove programs or synaptic.

Hi Dean,
actually, I think it is a bug. I don't think I explained the problem or
the resolution I found well enough.
I'm stuck in the house because of a storm but when I make it back to my
office I'll follow up with the solution I found.
Hopefully it'll help other users and hopefully the bug (or idiosyncrasy)
of the installation will be caught by either the W3C team that did the
build, or the Ubuntu family.
I'm not saying my claims are valid since I've only been using Ubuntu for
a short period of time. I have, however, done extensive writing and web
development teaching/ support in the windows world.
I'm looking forward to writing some pieces about doing common web
designer tasks in the Ubuntu OS.
I'm really enjoying it and hopefully my notes will make it easier for
others who want to try it.

Chris

Please do, if it is a bug it's no problem to re-open the bug.

W3C Amaya List:
Try doing this - go to System→Administration→Synaptic, search for "Amaya", right-click on any installed amaya packages and remove them. Then you'll be able to install it from Add/Remove.
Ubuntu's package for Amaya and the one provided by Amaya are slightly different, and since you tried to install both they conflicted.

Result was success. Amaya 11 is really nice. Amaya 9.5 had design area rendering problems in both preview and split view and was unusable.

Summary:
You install amaya 9.5 from the ubuntu repositories (this also installed amaya-data and amaya-doc)
Found it had some rendering bugs and so uninstalled "amaya" (this left amaya-doc and amaya-data installed)
Tried to install amaya 11 from the w3 site which failed as it is packaged differently (no separate -docs and -data packages)

The w3s amaya should either switch to ubuntu style packaging (i.e with -docs and -data packages) or cause those packages to be removed when installing (conflict/replace). That is up to them to deal with.

I think in future we will automatically remove packages that are probably obsolete (like the amaya-docs and amaya-data packages in this example) but only when the user is upgrading between releases.

wouldn't it make more sense to upgrade the Ubuntu repository for Amaya from
9.5 to 11?
Chris
PS: one of the issues it hung on was an image in user/share/amaya.png.

As a general rule we don't upgrade applications in repositories once
that version of ubuntu is released. Exceptions are made for
security-only and some bugfix-only changes. See the full policy and
reasoning at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

It would be appreciated if you filed bugs for the specific issues you
were having with amaya 9.5.

Thanks,
Dean
