You need to enable Multiverse Repositories (System->Administration->Software Sources)

After that try to play the Mp3 with the default Player it should then ask you if you want to install the codec ...

I went with all the non-free components, i know it's unethical but i find it easier - many people prefer restricting themselves to only OpenSource and that's becoming a better option each day. Choose one way or the other and then follow all the relevant instructions for whichever way. No i haven't had to pay anything but any problems that arise are a bit more troublesome to sort out because of going for the non-OpenSource, on the plus side i seem to have less problems to start with ;)
