KDE Sound in Ubuntu 7.04

Asked by Dave Dexter

Audio applications Rhythmbox and Songbird work fine in Ubuntu 7.04 but Amarok does not. Amarok will open an Internet stream and display a spectrum but no sound happens. Had the same problem in 6.10 and, despite much googling and reading of fora, a solution that worked for me has not yet appeared -- and I have tried a bunch. Apparently gstreamer has found my audio card (Chaintech AV710) but I don't know how to share that information with KDE applications.

Okay, here some pointers.

* Amarok doesn't user gstreamer, it uses xine. So make sure you have the package 'libxine-extracodecs' installed
* In Amarok, under Settings -> Configure Amarok -> Engine try different Settings for 'Output plugin'. If autodetect doesn't work maybe settings it to ALSA or OSS will make it work.
* If nothing else helps, you could try to enable ALSA's software mixer (set Output plugin in Amarok to ALSA for this). Instructions to enabling software mixing for ALSA can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems under 'Software Mixing'.

Can you help with this problem?
