Asked by Ebenezer

I want to play my mp3/wma format files that i used play before i switched to Ubuntu. I don't have an internet connection on my PC. Does the Ubuntu install CD have any software i can use without having to go to the internet.

Try looking around on the Cd using a package Manager. To do this try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. In the "Settings" menu click on "Repositories", in the gui that pops up click on the 2nd tab "Third Party Software" and tick the "cdrom:[Ubuntu ..." option. Close that and click on the reload button in Synaptic.

You should now be able to use either search tool in Synaptic to look up software that's already included on your Ubuntu Cd but that hasn't been installed for some reason. Note the the "Search" button also looks in descriptions as well as in titles so it allows you to be a bit more vague. All packages already installed are marked with a green blob. To install something just right-click on it and choose appropriately.

RhythmBox and Amarok seems popular for music but i only use Totem as i'm more used to it from playing movies.

Note that there is a way to use some sort of rewritable medium, such as a Usb stick, to get a shopping list of packages and updates which can then be downloaded from a different machine - even a Windows machine! I'm not sure how to do this so it's worth hunting around the "Solved" questions or try posing a new question about this.

Hope this helps with fishing ;)
Good luck and regards from
