install mp3 support for amarok in kubuntu

Asked by Wolfpack

I've just installed Kubuntu 8.10 and tried to play mp3 files. Amarok displays the message that it can't play mp3 files and tells to download the support. When I install this, it says...THERE WAS AN ERROR INSTALLING MP3 SUPPORT. YOU NEED TO INSTALL THE PACKAGE LIBXINE1-FFMPEG MANUALLY. The only tab there is OK. how do i install this one? Do i need to download the package? where can i get it? I'm a regular windows user and completely new to linux. I've intel p4 2.66GHz with 1.2Gb RAM. what should I do?

Hi, amarok using gstreamer engine to decode mpeg 3 audio format (it worked very good for me). You try again : re-install amarok. If not successful, you should check mixer.

Open Konsole/Terminal and type the command:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras

i tried "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras" in the
terminal and got the following response:-
E: Type 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu/deb' is
not known on line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.

I tried to use add-remove software and the adept installer failed to launch...

You have third-party repositories, which I don't think you need anymore, since kde 4 is included in kubuntu 8.10.
You've added a bad debian source repository in the /etc/apt/sources.list

If you don't know how to remove it, post the output of these commands:
ls -lR /etc/apt/sources.list*
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*

Yes, in Konsole. What do you mean command not found? That's weird, anyway!

I think kate is the text editor in KDE right?
execute:
kdesudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Or figure out a way to be able to be able to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as root.
Now remove the last four lines:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu/deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu/deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4-ubuntudeb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu intrepid main

(Save and close kate.)

then go to adept and update/reload/refresh/fetch updates from the repositories.

This should fix it :)
