Can't update Amarok 1.4 to 2 in Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by jmack

I am using Ubuntu 8.10. I have tried several ways to get Amarok 2 without success.

sudo apt-get install amarok-kde4 gave the following response.

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package amarok-kde4

The only thing I haven't tried is to completely uninstall 1.4 as I don't want to loose the settings I have already created.

Does Amarok 2 work with Ubuntu 8.10?

I am trying to upgrade principally because 1.4 runs so slow it is unusable. I have a large music collection, but have no problems running Totem Movie Player or Rhythmbox or several different players in Windows XP.

Thanks

Have you tried to install it using the Kubuntu ppa for Amarok 2?
Instructions at the bottom of this page:
http://www.kubuntu.org/news/amarok-2.0

Sorry, but I a real dummy at Linux so I need some hand-holding.
I have tried the links you suggested with the following results:

jim@jim-desktop:~$ deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu intrepid main
bash: deb: command not found
jim@jim-desktop:~$ sudo apt -get amarok-kde4
sudo: apt: command not found

I remember using apt to install other stuff, but now it doesn't work???

Thanks

Nothing happens when I past amarok-kde4 into the Adept manager, but when I type amarok into the Synaptic package manager, it says the amarok 2:1.4.10 Oubuntu3 is installed. The Amarok screen doesn't have the 2 thus I assume it is only 1.4 as noted in the splash screen.

Go to Software Sources under the system menu.
Click Third-Party Software.
Click add.
Paste this in:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu intrepid main

Click close.

Then you can either load synaptic or type sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

It should show you the upgrade for amarok.

Your method seemed to have worked, but Synaptic still shows Amarok 2:1.4.10.

Whoa, now I can't get any sound. I get the message "audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect: Connection refused" when I test in Sound Preferences. What have I screwed up??? :-(

I found this in another posting:
rm ~/.asoundrc*

jim@jim-desktop:~$ sudo rm ~/.asoundrc*
[sudo] password for jim:
rm: cannot remove `/home/jim/.asoundrc*': No such file or directory

A search for asoundrc in the File system (with File Browser) comes up empty.

I actually had problems myself with these packages, but I figured it was just my system. I would suggest reverting back and waiting until Jaunty to get amarok2 or at least until they backport it officially to Intrepid. Let me know if you want the instructions for going back. I'm sorry that I cannot help anymore.

Thanks, but 1.4 was unusable in that it took forever to load anything. At least 2 is quick, but,... no sound... Which is better???

I guess I will leave it as is & hope an update solves the problem. In the meantime, back to Windows. ;-(

You can try posting in the kde forums possibly. Maybe someone else can pick this question up?
