How do I find the "last.fm" code/url for a radio station,please?

Asked by Ian English

Hey, Anyone!
I'm new to Ubuntu and have a wonderful time trying to get Real Player to work. But now I find that there are some radio stations, like Classic FM, Smooth FM , only seem to work with Windows Media Player , so I thought that I might give Amarok a go.

Ta,
Ian

Ok, not to bombard, as there are a dozen excellent music players for Ubuntu, and any one of them should do fine, I know that Banshee (http://banshee-project.org) can play almost any internet stream, but its not equipped to stream from last.fm. There are a few dedicated last.fm clients (such as last-exit), as well as larger solutions such as amarok.

Hers a 5 second screencast on radio streams in amarok.

Dear Kevin & 'txwikinger',

Thank you for your suggestions.
My quest to switch on and listen to Classic FM continues. The problem seems to be Classic FM's website; it asks for a plug-in before it will play, which is

      application/x- mplayer

This implies to me that Classic FM ( and some other radio stations, I presume, as well) prefers Microsoft at all times??????

I will continue to persevere to find a way using RhythmBox and then Amarok.

Thanks again,

Ian

try upgrading to 7.04 (feisty)... it is still a beta but quite stable at this point... the final release is later this month...

after you upgrade install the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package...

i'm running it on my machine at work and it is great...

my ubuntu machine handles windows media better than my mac...

in fact i have not yet come across media that it can't handle

Well, 2 years on, and the problem persists!

I'm running 9.04, and no, it still doesn't work. I've installed audacious; and mplayer. they don't work.

Anyone got any other ideas? I don't want to spend my time downloading and trying out every audio plug-in or player that exists. It shouldn't be necessary.

The ClassicFM URL http://mediaweb.musicradio.com/playlist.asx?streamid=2
didn't work for me on Rhythmbox but did work on VLC.

However, when I entered the http URL into VLC I noticed it redirected to
mms://mediasrv-sov.musicradio.com/ClassicFM?MSWMExt=.asf

...which did work in Rhythmbox.

NB I have 10Mb broadband yet it took about 30s to buffer in Rhythmbox.

Rhythmbox 0.12.8
VLC 1.0.6 Goldeneye

I recently had a similar problem trying to play Chill FM on ubuntu so loaded up URLSnooper2 in windoze and voila.

Classic FM gives

http://mediasrv-the.musicradio.com/ClassicFM?MSWMExt=.asf

and/or

http://81.20.48.50:80/ClassicFM?MSWMExt=.asf

Hope this is of some use for future reference.

ChillFM can be got at http://media-ice.musicradio.com/ChillMP3.m3u if anyone is interested.

Can you help with this problem?
