Can't Install Amarok - Help !!!

Asked by taurus

I installed Amarok - or at least I think I did - through: 'sudo aptitude install amarok.' However, I can't find it in my 'Sound & Video' menu and I can't run it in terminal. I do get the following message in terminal though when I "install" it. How do I install Amarok??? Help!!!

sudo apt-get install amarok

In a terminal window type

sudo dpkg --configure -a

If that does not rectify it, it is possible through System menu, Administration, Synaptic to fix broken packages.

Or you could uninstall and reinstall.

That is a good answer.

You can do in terminal window:

sudo apt-get install -f --->>> its use for complete and installation. Then make an:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Look at your sources and change it if the problem appears again. You can change it in synaptic. In synaptic, go to Configuration>Repositories. A window will appear and select "Dowload From" and choose another server to download repositories from it. Then refresh repositories list and make an upgrade.

See you

Hi, Gabriel. Thanks for the reply. Below is a message I got when I tried to install amarok from synaptics. Please, tell me what it means and how to preceed from here, I'd appreciate it:

The following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required depositories are added and enabled in preferences.

amarok:
Depends: amarok-xine but it is not going to be installed or
amarok-engine
Depends: kdelibs4c2a (>=4:3.5.8-1) but 4:3.5.8-0ubuntu2 is to be installed
Depends: libgpod3-nogtk but it is not installable or
libgpod3 but it is not installable
Depends: libmp4v2-0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libmtp7 but it is not installable
Depends: libpq5 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libruby1.8 (>=1.8.6.111) but 1.8.6.36-1ubuntu3 is to be installed

How do I install all required depositories in preferences? Sorry, but I'm still a bit of a newb.

Open a terminal and please type:

sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install amarok

If you are still in error please open your /etc/apt/sources.list type:

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

copy and paste the contents here.

Thank you

Ok.

Now, open your Synaptic and then go to Settings> Repositories
It will open Software sources, it shows the information about where the packaged come from.
Here you will enabled th Following Lines:

Canonical-supported Open Source software (main)
Community-maintained Open Source software (universe)
Propietary drivers for device (restricted)
Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse)

(if the lines are writed in other way, choose all without Source Code)

After it, you must do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Then, if your problem appears again you can change your Source of Repositories in the same window, clicking on :

Download From: Main Window (For example). ---> Click on it and choose another one(I use portugal servers)

Tell me if you got good or bad results.

See you!

I say something like that in the lasts posts, but yours is more clear : - )

Taurus, the problem was that your /etc/apt/sources.list was reading the cdrom when it trying to get the repositories and, if you dont put it, it make something like an "error" and interrump the installation, without reading the left repositories.

Now you will be able to install amarok.

See you, nice to meet you!

That its a little important jaja cause if you change your repos to gutsy, you could change the entire distribution to gutsy if you make and upgrade of your system.
If it already happen, dont worry, its not a critical error, you can change erasing hardy and writing gutsy.

This is what someone said from another forum. Maybe you can help me determine what is the precise package to install for my distribution (7.10). This is what he said:

"The problem is that you're not trying to install Amarok from the servers of your distribution, but from another server that has another version of KDE.
My advice is to find packages for your distribution. The alternative is to upgrade to the KDE version, but this might be complicated. I am sure there are Amarok packages for your version of Ubuntu."

You cannot forget that after any change in /etc/apt/sources.list you must do and update

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f ( For complete any installation that was interrumpted or install something that is needed).
sudo apt-get dis-upgrade -y ( For make an upgrade of the entire distibution).

See you!

Hi, Steven Rose. I followed your advice and when I tried to install the needed packages through 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade,' I noticed that it would take 30 minutes to download all these packages. I had to abort the operation. I won't fill up my hard drive with uneeded crap over a program. NO WAY! Is there another way of installing ONLY the needed packages or dependencies?

Also, Gabriel, the comand: 'sudo apt-get dis-upgrade -y' does not work. I get this in terminal:

x@xx:~$ sudo apt-get dis-upgrade -y
E: Invalid operation dis-upgrade

So, what's the next step?

Hi Gabriel. Thanks for your last reply correcting the command code. However, I don't want to upgrade my entire distribution to 8.04. I want to remain with 7.10.

As a side note, the update manager came up and presented me with 233 updates totaling 267 megabytes. I will NOT download 267 megs just for one little program. Doing so would be foolish. I won't bog down my hard drive with so many uneeded updates. At this point, do you suggest? I appreciate all your replies so far. Let me know, buddy.

Hi!

Im not talking about to upgrade to 7.10 to 8.04. You will do and upgrade into your Gusty. Some packages are "packaged" after the Version, like gutsy, is ready for download.
Some packages that are made for repair a bug or security package appear in this update. Im no talking about to chage your gutsy to Hardy.
However, you can get amarok only doing this:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install amarok

or you already have it installed???

See you

taurus,

It seems like you have a load of updates to get which are updates to the existing software that you already have installed.
These are security updates etc.

If you decide not to install these then that is your decision.

If you want to get just Amarok, then you need to open a terminal again (Applications menu, Accessories) and type

sudo apt-get install amarok

This is a KDE application that depends on libraries that are part of the KDE window manager and may pull in parts of that to get it working.
If you are looking for a similar applications for music playback that is more "native" to Ubuntu and it's default Gnome Window Manager you could try Rhythmbox in the Applications, Sounds and Video menu.
Alternatively try Banshee bu running the following in a terminal window...

sudo apt-get install banshee

Tony, thank you so much for your suggestion of Banshee. I've installed it and it looks good! The sound quality is awesome. However, one thing that's keeping me from clicking the 'Solved My Problem" button is that I can hear the songs on my headphones, but I can't hear them on my computer's speakers. Any suggestion for enabling this, buddy?
