not duplicates, not triplets but quadrulets in my collection

Asked by mir

i am new to linux, running hardy heron and amarok. i seem to have four of every track in my collections pane and amarok will actually play all four tracks, (they do not seem to be just ghosts). i had triplets of everything and i did try - playlist -remove duplicates and dead entries with no luck
so i thought that maybe amarok was reading the usb and the my music folder so i emptied the my music folder and only have the music on a usb memory stick, thought i had erased everything from my collection (at least i could no longer see any tracks displayed) and then collection has been set to read the usb drive in - settings - configure amarok - collection.
when i scanned my collection again i had four of everything and it's getting a bit silly, or perhaps i am! am i doing something silly?
thanks

Hello mir

try this:

Delete the amarok folder: /home/[name]/.kde/share/apps/amarok (press cntrl+H in your home folder to show hidden files)

Then start up Amarok again.

Bhavani Shankar.

i thought this had solved the problem, i opened some albums in the collection pane and there was only one of every track but when i looked further i found a few albums with duplicates in them.
i tried again to use playlist - remove duplicates and dead entries but nothing happens.
some albums display one track, some have two copies of every track and some have three.
when i look at the folders in the music -usb they all look fine.
any more ideas? thanks

Hello

again repeat the above procedure and

Try:

Tools -> Rescan Collection

and almost always works, but it takes a while to resolve itself (depending on the size of your library).

Bhavani Shankar.

this is a great resource, it's cool to be able to get help so quickly and easily, it's a lovely contrast to windoze which i hated but used for years - thanks a lot

i ran through all the instructions again and rescanned a few times - no change
i even did a restart but no luck.
at least rhythmbox works ok so i guess i will just use that and keep trying amarok every now and then to see if there is any change.
thanks for the help tho

Have you only got one library of music set up in amarok?

Hi mir, i have the same problem, what i am doing now is use fslint and select them manually, there are more than 60000 tracks in library and 12000 are duplicates, have been working on it for a day and stil need more than 8 hrs to finish, try that program and let me know if you find a better way to delete the files insted of one by one...... regards

Hi Leonardo, not sure what fslint is but my problem does seem to be resolving - i discovered that amarok was reading the my music folder in the windows partition unknown to me (thanks Forestpixie for the hint) so i have stopped using the usb key and have repeatedly followed the instructions given by Bhavani Shankar.
most tracks in the list are now down to one copy so it is more manageable.
thanks to everyone for their help...

Well I'll be darn! I thought I was the only one with the problem because I do know I have music all over my HD. The combo Forestpixie/mir shed light on the subject... my 'windoze' partition libraries are being read as well. By the way... isn't it neat to be able to see the 'windoze' partition files from Linux? Have different question on that too. Bhavani Shankar... that was a great hint. I realized I should do some house cleaning on my drives to keep similar things together. Thanks you guys!!!
