9.10 Low Volume

Asked by vic

i have tried everything in the FAQ, installed gnome alsa-mixer, de-installed pulse audio, re-installed ubuntu, re-applied all updates, moved sliders to 150%, etc. etc. I have a partitioned machine and Vista is LOUD and has no problems... So it is definitely a 9.1 UBUNTU core problem. HDA Intel. The external microphone works fine... I tried several sounds applications, music, etc, all have very low volume. it is adjustable but is not loud enough for practical use. I want to stay on ubuntu, but unless I can fix this, i have to keep using windows... UGH!

I went through step by step instructions from the sound trouble shooter. I have a Sony VAIO VGC-RB57G. 828801G HDA-Intel with SIGMATEL CXD9872RD/K Codec. I edited the alsa-base.conf to include model=vaio, model=sony, model=5stack, 6stack, auto, gateway (for the heck of it), and re-booted the machine EVERYTIME. Nothing seems to work, I found a bug report on the exact same card, indicating there is still a problem... if anyone in the world knows the answer to this let me know. I tried removing ALSA and use OSS but that didnt work either.

Let me add this... I am also running VM Workstation on my Vista system so I tired UBUNTU 9.10 in a virtual machine and the sound works great. As a stand alone system, it doesn't work. SAME CODE, SAME ISO FILE LOAD. I have gone to all the "help" sights, added lines to the alsa config file, changed model, etc. etc. NOTHING has worked so for, except of course, logging in VISTA, then running UBUNTU 9.10 as a virtual machine.

Hi :)

Sorry no-one has been able to help you so far. Please try posting in a general linux forum to see if they can help there.
http://www.linuxquestions/org
is one good one.

If you found a bug-report about this issue please can you post the link to the bug-report in here? Also i wanted to check that you have run through this trouble-shooting guide although it looks like you probably have
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Also i wondered if you have already run through the medibuntu worksheet as this often sorts out all the multimedia problems on a particular machine
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
This neatly deals with the copywrite issues for whichever country you are in.

It might be just that you are using 64bit Ubuntu and you might find a LiveCd version of the 32bit version works better. For some reason people often have trouble with the 64bit version. I found that the 32bit version was even faster and smoother on my old 64bit machine
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
using a LiveCd session is a great way to test how well any version of linux is likely to work on a particular hardware setup although that is not what it is mainly designed for. Of course running your OS from Cd is a lot slower than a proper install but it gives a rough feel for how it might look.

A final note from me is that it does take a long tim to adapt to linux. Most people have spent years gradually learning all they know about Windows and so it is good to have a dual-boot system so that you can always pop back into Windows until you have everything figured out that you need in linux. Many of us keep an old Windows around in a dual-boot somewhere.

I hope something here helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

Have you been able to test the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta1
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
