Hello,

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an Averatec 3200 model. Did a clean install (no partition) and everything works great apart from the sound.

I have tried re-installing Alsa. Removing PULSE, checked UserGroups, Alsa Mixer, etc in short I've tried every suggestion out there. What am I missing> Anyone please give me some idea what else I could do?

Thank you,

Andrea

Go through sound preferences and check ALL tabs to ensure mute is not mistakenly enabled.
this is often a problem experienced with the mic not working.

I am going to try disabling the internal modem, once I find the instructions on how to do this. Hope that works. Thanks Marco. I will post after.

Still no audio> here is another readout> does this mean it is trying to play audio over the modem?

Your sound card is this:

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

But there are also the modem as audio capable device.

Here something you can try:

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then try to run gnome-alsamixer from menu Applications→Sound & Video GNOME Alsa Mixer

unmute and raise to a non zero values and retry.

if this doesn't solve

Please send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if possible) on this thread

Hope this helps

I installed VLC etc. still no sound. I really think it is the audiocard not being recognized and am searching for a way to fix this.
Thank you for giving it a try.

for what its worth, same on my computer... very low sound, tried EVERYTHING, re-installed, removed everything... followed all the recommendations... now, no sound card is noticed at all. But guess what? Vista sound works fine on my computer.. I have 2 partitions and can choose between Vista and UBUNTU at boot time.

I even re-installed UBUNTU... no help..

since no one answers my request for help, and the problems like this have been around for a few years, it must be an UBUNTU system problem that no one can figure out. I have seen the SAME problems going back to 2005 on many of the releases. My Computer is a popular COSTCO sold VAIO Desktop... no changes to sound card or board...

Looks like I'll trash UBUNTU for now.. was hoping to extend the life of my machine by using UBUNTU, if I have to use Windows for the sound card, it defeats the purpose. sorry I couldnt help.

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a Vaio and it runs without a hitch. That is why it was so frustrating to spend days with the audio problem on my Averatec 3200. I uninstalled Ubuntu yesterday installed the 9.04 version then upgraded to 9.10 disabled ALSA and PULSE and VOILA I have sound. LOUD too.

Thanks for everyone's attempts. Much appreciated. Now I am going to try installing the virtual desktop so I can get NETFLIX instant watch working (maybe) it's worth a try since I want to use this Averatec mainly as a media computer hooked to the TV and Stereo. Wish me luck.
