Hi asif,
Please try installing "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic" (then reboot). A number of audio problems on HP laptops have been resolved by installing this package. Also please ensure there are no extra "alsa model quirks" in your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Also ensure that your mic is not muted in alsamixer.

If this doesn't resolve your issue, please file a bug & link it to this question for me to be able to help your further.

This is how my alsa-base.conf file looks like
http://pastebin.com/f2184e945. I won't be able to tell if there is any
extra "alsa model quirks" sitting here

Also ensure that your mic is not muted in alsamixer.

How can I tell if it is muted or not?

Hi asif,
Your alsa-base.conf seems OK & doesn't appear to have any added "model quirks".

In the screenshot of alsamixer, see how the first 2 channels (master & PCM) show "00" in a green box along the bottom & are showing white, green & red in the bar on top of each channel? This shows that these channels are un-muted & turned up.

See how the 3rd channel (mic) is showing "NM", this means that this channel is muted. If you use the arrow keys to move the cursor across to the 3rd channel (mic) & press "m", this will un-mute your mic. Then if you press the up arrow, this will increase the mic volume. Try raising it to around "70" (i.e. keep pressing up until the numbers above "Mic" show "70" - it doesn't matter if it's not exactly "70", just need to be around 70).

Press "ESC" key to exit alsamixer & then test your microphone using Sound Recorder (Applications --> Sound & Video --> Sound Recorder) as some other 3rd party apps (i.e. skype) have bugs that will lead you to believe your mic is not working when it is actually a bug in a 3rd party program.

Hope this helps. If not, please do the same as you just did by posting a screenshot of your alsamixer as this was very helpful.

I followed your steps and now it is working! Excellent! thanks a lot

Now I can record using Sound Recorder and can playback fine.

It even works in my VM windows.
