crackling sound coming through speakers on an hp dv9000

Asked by Sean

I'm getting a crackling sound every so often through my speakers. I'm using an HP dv9000 and I have the mic input muted and I even boosted the pcm and also set it to 0 and the problem was still there. Not sure what else to try to get rid of this issue.

Hi :)

Not sure if this helps but when my neighbour uses his spin dryer i get a crackling noise too. I have had other electrical problems in this building so i am about to get a ups to plug my machine into to hopefully smooth the electrical supply. I really should reorganise my wiring to avoid having the speakers data lead crossing over the power supply lead so many times.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi Sean,
This sounds a lot like the "[9.10 regression] HDA power_save=10" bug. See the link below (I used tinyurl as the actual Launchpad URL is huge & would more than likely come out malformed when I pasted it here) for bug reports related to that issue.
http://tinyurl.com/ybhwpyv

Please have a look through a couple of those bug reports to see if the symptoms are in fact similar to yours. From the description of your problem, I believe it is very likely to be the same issue.

If this does indeed seem like the issue you are experiencing, this is a known problem & is being actively worked on.

As a temporary workaround whilst this is being worked on, please comment out the the last line in your alsa-base.conf by doing the following:
open a terminal
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
add a "#" to the last line which should then be "#options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N" (without the quotes).

Hi :)

I meant to post a link to the current best sound troubleshooting guide so here that is
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Mitch's answer looks a lot more relevant and useful
Good luck and regards from
