Mark,
I don't have the system with me. This question is basically to help my friend to solve sound issues. I am helping people transform to OSS. I will ask my friend to update this and in case if they have any any difficulty I would pitch in.

@sharanchitra: Try installing OSS4 (Open Sound System) in order to replace the Pulseaudio sound system using this link:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound

Then reboot and retest sound.

More details are here:

Hey guys, the issue with display is an already existing issue/bug in jaunty.
The system was configured for a default login.
I tried fixing it by deleting all gnome config files in the home directory of the default user, It didn't worked.

I went into single user mode. created a new user and ran a software update, I rebooted the system and logged in as the new user and the gnome GUI was fine this time. I rebooted the system again and tried logging in as the old default user and I am able to log into gnome GUI.
I guess there were some conflicts in configuration or application that might have been fixed by the update or when I removed all the config files. I am not sure about the root cause but the best part is the system is working fine now and it has both the GUI and sound issues fixed. Thank you guys for your support.
