No Sound (Volume Control) Icon

Asked by Richard A Bevis

Help! When I started my computer there were 2 volume control icons to the right on the upper panel. I right clicked one and removed it, but then both icons disappeared. I am running Karmic 64 and don't find a volume control icon in the add to panel list. I can go to System>Preferences>Sound, but I miss the quick adjust-ability. Thanks volumes ha ha.

Enable it again in
system preferences -> start programs
CLI:
gnome-session-properties

In case reboot afterwards.

When I went to System>Preferences>Startup Applications, Volume Control was checked. I unchecked it, rebooted, checked it and rebooted again with no appearance of the icon. We are talking the same thing here? The little speaker with the sound waves coming out. I'm not sure what CLI: gnome-session-properties means. Where to from here?

In a related issue and I don't know why I didn't notice it before, my ethernet connected icon is missing also. These were the 2 icons to the right on the upper panel, just left of the date/time. I guess I don't really need them. I wouldn't be talking to you now if I wasn't internet connected and the pulse audio volume control I installed from synaptic then dragged from applications>sound/video works great, but I'm curious. Thanks again. R

Ah, please add 'Notification Area' to panel.
Right click on empty space in the panel -> add to panel - a list appears which incl. 'Notification Area'.

From your first post
> I right clicked one and removed it, but then both icons disappeared

actually you can't remove the speaker symbol (volume control) with right click.
Or any other symbol within 'Notification Area', e.g. nm-applet (network symbol).
e.g. when you right click on speaker symbol it offers 'mute' and 'preferences'.

A random case of vanishing could happen again with nm-applet (for example after reboot), seems to be a bug, but very hard to trace what exactly is the cause. It's important for users with wireless or if one needs to en/disable network manually.

Awesome! I got as far as figuring out it's an applet not a launcher (the speaker one anyway), but not how to get it back. Now, after the add to panel notification area sequence, both have magically reappeared. Thanks a million, Sam.

Yep, 'applets' are in notification area, 'icons' are on the panel.

CLI = Command Line Interface
Command for Startup Applications:
gnome-session-properties

CLI helps a lot when
- GUI (graphical user interface = frontend for app = script) is broken
- in case we need to generate some error messages
- one can't find it in the menus
- and other useful stuff
