Serious sound issues in Karmic

Asked by Myroslav

In trying to fix system sound issues (no system sound), I seem to have really messed my sound. I followed instructions on this site: http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/12/17/upgrade-alsa-1-0-22-on-ubuntu-karmic-koala-9-10/

Now I have no volume control on boot up and all kinds of crackling noise.

ALSA output shows the following issue:

Please use gnome-alsamixer to unmute and increase volume to 77% on all mixer channels, including the Master and PCM channels.

The Master and PCM volume channels are currently set to 0% volume.....

You can start gnome-alsamixer from the Terminal.

Thank you for your response. I have done what you suggested.

My problem now is that I have no volume appelate at all in my tray, no sound, and do not know how to configure PulseAudio device chooser. I set it at default and get the message, "connection refused".

Please follow part A in the following guide:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578

The PulseAudio "connection refused" error is described there as well.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for your time and patience, but neither of your suggestions solved my problem.

I think I have to find some way to get pulseaudio going again.

Well, I think your ALSA upgrade to version 1.0.22 failed.

Your ALSA output shows the following problem:

# ALSA Version
# ------------
#
# Driver version: 1.0.21
# Library version: 1.0.22
# Utilities version: 1.0.22

Your ALSA driver version is still on version 1.0.21, but the ALSA library is on 1.0.22

I suggest reverting back to ALSA driver, library and utilities version 1.0.21 using this procedure:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/10/29/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-karmic-koala-9-10/

You will need to follow the whole procedure to the letter, without skipping any steps.

Maybe ALSA v1.0.21 was already working fine on your pc, but you also had the issue of having the volume level set at 0% for the Master and PCM channels....

If that does not help either, you should start thinking about testing the 32-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 instead....

I have volume control back in place and have sound in rythmebox, but have not checked other applications. There are still no system sounds and I get random crackling sounds

I found a comment here: http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8463538 where someone suggested the following: "I had a file in my home directory called '/home/username/.pulse-cookie' that was owned by root and write protected.
I did 'sudo rm ~/.pulse-cookie' and everything started working instantly." I tried it and I have what I mentioned above.

Now to get things properly configured and finding some way to resolve my remaining problems. Do you know what the correct settings are for PulseAudio Devise Chooser? I have already made the changes in Gnome Alsamixer.

Do you think I should undertake the procedure you suggest?

Thank you for your help.

I did as you suggested and installed alsa1.0.21. I had to delete the cookie file to get a volume control applete and to use Pulse-Audio Device Server.

I still have no system sound but I do have good sound in other devices. Random crackling sounds persist. Sound is muted every time I boot the machine and I have to turn on sound manually. I am back to where I started two days ago. What aggravation and a waste of time.

Are there any other ideas to fix the sound, or should we stop this thread as fixed?
