The issue is the following:
Sound Driver:
Kernel: Linux phaswatl-laptop 2.6.28-17-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 1 18:57:07 UTC 2009 i686
Your ALSA driver and library versions are not the same. And this is caused by the fact that you are booting the old Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04) kernel instead of the new Karmic kernel (version 2.6.31). So kernel version 2.6.28-17-generic is incorrectly set as the default kernel to boot, which is incompatible with the new ALSA libraries (version 1.0.20 or higher) installed for use by the new 2.6.31 Karmic Koala kernel.
Please try rebooting and choose the 2.6.31 Karmic kernel in the grub boot menu. Then boot and retest sound. If it still does not work, then I think the upgrade to 9.10 failed.
If you cannot find or install the 2.6.31 kernel using Synaptic or aptitude, then I suggest reinstalling Ubuntu 9.10 from a LiveCD session.

Thanks Mark Rijckenberg, that solved my question.
