c-media via tech. digital out

Asked by roly

After a disastrous time with 9.10 (I have a Radeon 9250 video card) I uninstalled and went back to 8.10 and got everything back working.

Everything that is except my optical digital out, which I remember wasn't an obvious fix, but was quite painless.

I have a via tech motherboard with onboard c-media ac97, with the usual in and outs plus optical out.

I have removed / played and tweaked with the alsa components and just can't get there.

Also gone blind reading other posts all over the web.

This is not a major issue and I know I've just missed something or more like messed something in my bumbling.

Cheers

Err I've fixed it, for now.

Did another clean install of 8.10 to restore everything I played with back to their original settings.

Right clicked the speaker icon on the top right panel and chose open volume controls.

changed the device to c-media.

On preferences ticked digital, closed this dialogue and set the digital volume slider to max.

attempted a reboot, but unusually the system just hung, so reset the computer manually.

went back into the volume control and again set digital volume to max and this time rebooted successfully.

Sweet music to my ears, yet to apply all the upgrades, so fingers crossed.

I hope anybody in the same boat as I was can see how easy it is to enable their digital out, on their c-media card.

Easy that is once someone has told you what to do as the instructions for this app are far from adequate, which is a shame as the app is brilliant.
