No Audio after updating to 9.10

Asked by Ryan Czar

Hello. I was running 9.0 on this IBM Thinkpad 600x. Everything was going GREAT! I updated to 9.10 last night and now I have no sound! The volume adjusts are set to 100% all around and I hear nothing. I even plugged in external speakers and headphones and still I don't hear anything! Is there an easy fix for this problem?
Thanks,
Ryan

Ok I tried Leoquant's idea and It still did not work.

Vikram, I followed your instructions also and I still hear no sound.

I am relatively new to Ubuntu Linux. I have been a PC user for most of my life. This laptop I am using is pretty old but the previous version I was using ran just fine and I had sound. I am assuming that I was to use the terminal to follow the directions that you've given me. When I did there were definitely things going on in the terminal. I rebooted and checked to see if there was sound and none. So I tried Vikram's instructions and saw more things going on in the terminal but still achieved no sound. I looked at my audio preferences and noticed under the Output tab it says "Dummy Output 100%" So can somebody explain to me what the problem means. On a PC I would think that I am missing the proper audio driver. So I assume that is to be the case here?

Thanks for helping to get this solved quickly!
If you need any more information from me that could prove useful just let me know.

The issue is the following:

# Kernel Information
# ------------------
#
# Kernel release: 2.6.28-15-generic
# Operating System: GNU/Linux
# Architecture: i686
# Processor: unknown
# SMP Enabled: Yes
#
#
# ALSA Version
# ------------
#
# Driver version: 1.0.18rc3
# Library version: 1.0.20
# Utilities version: 1.0.20

Your ALSA driver and library versions are not the same. And this is caused by the fact that you are booting the old Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04) kernel instead of the new Karmic kernel (version 2.6.31). So kernel version 2.6.28-15-generic is incorrectly set as the default kernel to boot, which is incompatible with the new ALSA libraries installed for use by the new 2.6.31 Karmic Koala kernel.

Please try rebooting and choose the 2.6.31 Karmic kernel in the grub boot menu. Then boot and retest sound. If it still does not work, then I think the upgrade to 9.10 failed. If you cannot find or install the 2.6.31 kernel using Synaptic or aptitude, then I suggest reinstalling Ubuntu 9.10 from a LiveCD session.

Ok I just need to know how to get to the grub boot menu please. Forgive me for not being savy quite yet but I am very new to this and am still learning.

Right after booting and after seeing the BIOS related boot messages, press the ESC key and then you should see the grub menu. It is the first text-based menu you see BEFORE booting Ubuntu itself.

Ok I tried this and I don't see 2.6.31. I have Synaptic Package Manager open now and want to try to find or install this kernel. I scrolled to the Kernel and Modules but I don't see anything that looks related. So I must need a walkthrough for this as well. I'd like to avoid a complete re-install if possible because it took a very long time to update this time. or what is aptitude?

Ok so while I was waiting for your response I typed in "alsa" in synaptic and found the file with the correct number 2.6.31 and I installed it. I rebooted and got to the grub menu and the 2.6.31 was in the list. So I selected it and guess what? When it booted I was greeted by the familiar start-up sound! So Thank you very much for the support and valuable experience I just gained!
Appreciated!

Okay so some days have passed and now I'm having no sound again. strange. although this time instead of it saying I have a "dummy output" it says I have internal analog stereo "Output: 0% -140.98 dB" Normally this computer beeps when I turn the power on and it doesn't even do that now. What might have happened? How can I fix this so that the sound just stays on? Do I need to repeat all of the steps that I did before?
