Trouble shooting sound procedure

Asked by avhation

Is this trouble shooting procedure ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure) applicable to Hardy Heron - I cannot get th elink at Step 1 to work. I have several ALSA packages installed including ALSA base and ALSA utils. I have spent 2 days trying to get sound back after trying to get recorder to work and may have broken something.

I am afraid the ALSA upgrade procedure only works correctly on Ubuntu 9.04 or Ubuntu 9.10. I have seen other people also have issues upgrading ALSA on Ubuntu 8.04.

I suggest doing a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 - while preserving the data on your /home directory - and then following the ALSA upgrade procedure here:

Thank you. This answer confirms my pessimistic thought that it seemed too good to be true that the procedure applied to all earlier iterations of Ubuntu, as implied.
