Limited application sound

Asked by John

I've been experiencing some issues with my sound ever since I updated to the newest ALSA build from the source yesterday. I've followed the steps at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure with no luck thus far. Firefox plays sounds just fine and I can listen to and watch YouTube videos as well as hear sound from Java applets. However, other application sounds (like those in Pidgin, Skype, XChat, and others) do not play when they should.

A pastebin link to the result of the alsa-info script can be found at: http://pastebin.ca/1713789

The terminal output from step 4 in the Sound Troubleshooting guide can be found at: http://pastebin.ca/1713794

Thank you very much for your assistance.

This is not a fix, this is just what works for me.

I click on Applications/Sound & Video/Pulse Audio Device Chooser
Pulse Audio icon will appear, just click that and navigate to Volume Control (this is not the same as gnome volume) You will get a popup box with several options just choose Output Devices. In that same box, if you look at the top of output devices you should see a lock and a drop down box. That is where you determine which device the sound will travel through. I have to change these settings quite frequently from headset to speakers and this is the best option I have found so far. I'm sure there is a better way and if you find it, I too would like to know.

If Pulse doesn't work make sure to check System/Preferences/Sound and change everything to ALSA advanced linux s.. except for maybe your mic. Anyway I hope that helped you out. Good luck.

note* You may have a different version installed, I'm still running 9.04 and I have modified my system so much at this point I can't remember what I added and what was already here. With that being said, if you need any extra packages to make this work just ask or send me an email..

I tried fiddling around with those settings with no luck either. I'm running 9.10, also, so I guess some of that doesn't apply anymore.

I installed the PulseAudio Volume Control - gave me the same basic input/output controls as Sound Preferences - selected
Soundblaster Analog Stereo - still no microphone input.

I'm not sure why you marked that as an answer (it wasn't much of a solution and didn't solve my problem). I'm still searching for some working sound.

I believe I fixed the problem after following the instructions on this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=32063

My application sound seems to be working normally again, and this problem seems to be solved.

I know this is closed/solved but I just wanted to post back with an update. I intsalled 9.10 (kde) and my solution works there as well. Here is a screencap: http://i48.tinypic.com/fz7s7c.png
