ubuntu9.10, alsa .21, NO sound (not even upon starting)

Machine with 9.04 was upgraded to 9.10 and problems started; after an attempt to extend the RAM, the problems were total - it was sent for service. When it got back it wouldn't work properly. I installed 9.04 anew: extreme problems (no sound, no recognition of USB-sticks...). I upgraded to 9.10. Everything "cured" except sound. No sound at start-up, no sound at videos, youtube, players (vlc, totem etc), even though everything seems to be working fine (seconds flowing...).

Ubuntu user since a year now - absolute beginner. Googled for a loooong time, but the only thing i decided to do (except checking with System>Preferences>Sound
and terminal:

was to follow this link (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure) and this link (http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/) in order to upgrade my alsa to 1.0.21
No matter how many restarts and experimenting with System>Preferences>Sound i did, i haven't been able to get any sound AT ALL!

speaker cable was unplugged

so the problem was solved through
1) following this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
OR
2) upgrading alsa to 1.0.21
(following these steps: http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/)
OR
3) disabling the motherboard audio chip through BIOS as Mark Rijckenberg advised me {{and reenabling it}}.

So I reckon that since this question doesn't have one answer for sure, it could be removed.
