You are still using an old Alsa version (1.0.14rc1) which is known to have problems with HDA devices.
Have a look at this page for info on how to update it:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

Note that since you declare yourself as a linux newbie some of the things you have to do are not trivial.
If you don't feel confident leave the situation as is and wait for Gutsy which will fix this.

Hi,

I have the same problem.
I installed the latest alsa drivers, but the volume control is displaying that the volume is muted.
When I dubleclick on it it says No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
when issue lspci:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

soundcore 8672 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 11272 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

george@gxg:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound reload
Shutting down sound driver: /usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1253: No soundcards found...
done
Starting sound driver: snd-hda-intel done
/usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1329: No soundcards found...

I loaded the module:
george@gxg:~$ sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
So the card is present, the driver is installed, why it is not working. Isn't this card supported in ubuntu and it is something normal not to work?

Thanks a lot,
George
