no sound

Asked by dbch

I just bought this computer from free geek. 7 day warranty expired. THEN I clued in that I haven't heard a sound out of it. It's ubuntu 8.04 and it came with alsa mixer installed. All volume is up and nothing is muted. What do I do next. I'd like to know what else I can do before I haul this thing - desktop - into a repair shop.

Thanks.

I suspect that your pc is experiencing this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/369000

I recommend testing sound on your pc using an Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD. If sound works during the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD session, then please do a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10.

I have downloaded 9.10. There was no sound all the way. I thought I might have heard a little beep but there s nothing. (I can t seem to get a comma yet)

I d like to bring up again that I bought this computer with ubuntu on it at free geek - they recycle old computers. They brought down a system for me and asked what monitor I d like and then which keyboard. When I came back from getting some cash because they don t have interact, there was a different monitor there. I was told that the other one didn t work. Might there be something that s not working that s why I can t get a soundÉ - that s supposed to be a question mark, gotta check to the keyboard :)

There is a computer repair place across the street. Is there anything else that I could do before I go thereÉ

Thank you again for your time.

You could also try other distributions like PuppyLinux, Fedora, Mandriva, until you find a LiveCD where sound works out of the box. Always make sure to unmute and increase volume on the Master, PCM and Front channels in gnome-alsamixer.

Also test all the audio jacks on the soundcard using headphones to see if one of them outputs any sound.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask dbch for more information if necessary.
