Not working either on speakers or headphones.

Dual boot with XP, Windows sound levels 100%, working fine.

OW.

Nearly blew my eardrums out on headphones when I got system sounds on closing Firefox after posting this. Seems sound is almost working, just not on Flash videos at present. Ill do a bit more poking around before I close this.

Okay, everything seems to work fine on headphones, but not speakers at all.

Hi,

Please try this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. In the gedit text editor, scroll down to the end of the alsa-base.conf file and add these lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

# So you need to go into the alsa-base.conf file and then add the following lines at the end of it.
# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

3. Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA

4. reboot and retest sound

5. In the Mixer control panel, make sure to unmute all channels and increase the volume on all channels

6. If it still does not work, please try one of the following model options instead (replacing 3stack as model option):

 ALC880
3stack 3-jack in back and a headphone out
3stack-digout 3-jack in back, a HP out and a SPDIF out
   5stack 5-jack in back, 2-jack in front
5stack-digout 5-jack in back, 2-jack in front, a SPDIF out
   6stack 6-jack in back, 2-jack in front
   6stack-digout 6-jack with a SPDIF out
   w810 3-jack
   z71v 3-jack (HP shared SPDIF)
   asus 3-jack (ASUS Mobo)
   asus-w1v ASUS W1V
   asus-dig ASUS with SPDIF out
asus-dig2 ASUS with SPDIF out (using GPIO2)
   uniwill 3-jack
   fujitsu Fujitsu Laptops (Pi1536)
   F1734 2-jack
lg LG laptop (m1 express dual)
   lg-lw LG LW20/LW25 laptop
   tcl TCL S700
   clevo Clevo laptops (m520G, m665n)
   medion Medion Rim 2150
   auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

You will need to reboot and retest sound after every change to the alsa-base.conf file

Regards,

Mark

I'm afraid you had me at step 3 with "change everything to ALSA". Maybe there's something wrong with the way my sound preferences are displaying, but I just don't see how this is done. I've searched around and find people referring to selecting it from a pulldown, and clicking on the test button - neither of which I can see. All I have on the hardware tab is what device to configure (with one choice) and what profile (duplex, input, output). On the Output tab I get what device, balance, and connector (speakers/headphones). I get the feeling something is missing here.

Oh, and now headphones don't work.

Did you try ALL the model options from step 6? After every model option change in the alsa-base.conf file, it is necessary to reboot and retest sound.

I can't get past step three, so I haven't got as far as step 6. I see no way\,given the options I have available in Sound Preferences as I outlined above, where I can switch everything to ALSA, let alone any of those model options. Maybe I'm being dense and not looking at the right option under the right tab, but I get the impression that there's something not right.

Please skip step 3 and continue with the rest to see if the rest of the procedure is enough to solve this issue.
