gstreamer0.10 plugin install caused sound muting

Asked by blackduck

Am trying to setup an older Compaq R3000 Presario with Karmic aboard. All went well until I played some M$ sound files. Wav files played ok but when I tried a .Mid extension, no joy. Instead the system offered to install a ffmpeg plugin gstreamer0.10. I agreed as I learn by doing.Problem now is there is no sound. Methinks I ought to remove the gstreamer plugin BUT, I don't know how. Request someone point me in the right direction.

Alright for starters, try a reboot, then do this:

sudo alsa force-reload

This will reload your sound modules, .Mid files aren't played very
well in Ubuntu. I recommend using a player like VLC which supports
just about every multimedia format. Reply back and tell us what your
results are

Lesson learned so far is to forget about .mid sound files. Info for readers: you're dealing with an old grampa nearing 80 whose learning curve isn't what it used to be. Patience & understanding are solicited.

VLC did not work either so I removed karmic and repartitioned the disc and reinstalled 9.10 and found
that a good procedure for i needed the education of installation.

sudo alsa force-reload advice did the job, sound is back.
