Sound issue.....

Hi, I am new to Linux & I am using Ubuntu 9.10, I have installed a sound card in my computer its model is Yamaha Corporation YMF-740C [DS-1L Audio Controller] the problem is that I am getting no sound at all, even though I have disabled the on board sound card through the BIOS.....No sound is the only thing that is stopping me from completely switching onto linux from windows.....Please help.....

What I think is that my sound card isnt being loaded at boot time, I have updated my alsa drivers to 1.0.21, but still the problem persists.....
