no soundcards found(It was normal ever before, but the problem came up next day)

Asked by Eliver

It was good but the next day I started my ubuntu, there was no sound with no reason. Then I did the following steps but couldn't solve the problem. Here it is:

eliver@eliver-desktop:~$ sudo aplay -l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
eliver@eliver-desktop:~$ sudo adduser eliver sound
adduser: The group `sound' does not exist.

I have the sound modules installed because when I used "find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd" and got the following long information"/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/snd-atiixp-modem.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/aw2/snd-aw2.ko

/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/echoaudio/snd-mia.ko

The sound card physically is also installed and recognized by my hardware because when I used"lspci -v | less""lspci -v | less"
I got the audio information" 00:08.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1)
        Subsystem: Giga-byte Technology Device a102
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10
        Memory at e5180000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel "

And then I took the step“sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload“ but got the following result :
"lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/eliver/.gvfs
      Output information may be incomplete.
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/eliver/.gvfs
      Output information may be incomplete.
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: (none loaded).
Loading ALSA sound driver modules: (none to reload).
"
(Besides:There's nothing wrong with my audio when I enter my Windows XP OS so I'm sure my hardware is good and there is nothing wrong with my BIOS setup.)

I don't know what it means and don't know how to fix the problem. Moreover I'm more confused about what leaded to the upset result . I've search google for many times and tried in many other ways but…… I have used Ubuntu for less than a mounth. Please help me , I don't know what's wrong with my Ubuntu. Thank you very much.

So sorry I got in trouble with the step1:"eliver@eliver-desktop:~$ cat /proc/asound/version
cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory"

Besides I got this information by another way.Maybe there's some useful information but I'm not good enough to analyze it . Here:

The ALSA information script output that you previously sent, does not seem correct. It looks like the output from someone else's pc, because the output from step 3 and step 4 do not correspond. The ALSA information script output was run on April 29, 2009 and NOT today.

"Script ran on: Wed Apr 29 12:17:04 UTC 2009"

Please send us correct output from step 3 from this procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Make sure to give us the new Pastebin URL location where your pc's ALSA info is stored.

Thank you so muck , Mark Rijckenberg. Today I updated my Ubuntu Kernel from Linux 2.6.31-14-generic to Linux 2.6.31-15-generic,and then my Ubuntu works well under Kernel Linux 2.6.31-15-generic . So there are two Kernels in my Ubuntu . Of course when I entered Kernel Linux 2.6.31-14-generic ,the problem was still there,no sound, no soundcard find....I don't know why , how could it come to be like that . Actually,I'm eager to find out the answer but there is anothing thing more important for me to do with,so I'll study it latter. Could you tell me what's wrong with my Kernel Linux 2.6.31-14-generic(my PC is also works well under Ubuntu9.04 ) in your view? Can you guess it ? What's your view about this problem?

Version 2.6.31-14-generic probably contained a bug/regression that did not allow your sound card to work.

If the sound issue is now solved (using kernel 2.6.31-15-generic), please set the thread status to "solved"
