firefox flash audio only plays alsa

Asked by Nigel Hollick

Karmic Koala 9.10, Fiefox 3.5.5, i386, All audio works except for Flash on Firefox. Video plays. <system><sound preferences><applications> seems to suggest that the audio is playing but in the background on Alsa, but is not being reproduced. Have tried to follow and implement other threads without success. From these threads I somehow get the idea that if Alsa could find Pulse all would be fine. Could not find a way to see if Pulse is being used by my computer or in fact any way to find out what is being used.

The solution I found was to remove all references, packages, everything referring to Pulse Audio by:-

I. In startup Applications Preferences switch off Pulse Audio Session Management.

2. Ubuntu Software Centre under Installed Packages search Pulse and remove everything referring to pulse.

3. Using Computer Janitor remove all unused libraries that relate to Pulse.

4. Install ALSA plugins and packages.

Why UBUNTU chose to saddle everybody with Pulse Audio which doesn't work and never has in an otherwise brilliant release of Karmic Koala 9.10 is a complete and total mystery, particularly as the development team know it doesn't work with firefox, seamonkey etc.
