Ubuntu 9.10 no sound on Gateway laptop MT6707

Never had problems before on this laptop. But the problem seems to be only w/ Ubuntu 9.10. I tried to do a full re-install and the same result: no sound.

I followed the Troubleshooting procedures, and if I unswerstand correctly I am supposed to cut and past the following:
