No sound under Ubuntu 9.10 on HP Compaq dc7100

Clean install of Ubuntu 9.10. Adobe Flash plug-in only update done so far.
No audio.
Have had previous versions of Ubuntu (8.04, 9.04) on this machine. Audio worked without intervention.

The troubleshooting guide got me to produce this.

The sound system is muted: 'Simple mixer control 'Master',0'. Use alsamixer to unmute and increase volume to 100 (if not installed use sudo apt-get install alsamixer command in a terminal and then type in alsamixer and use your arrow keys to move through controls and increase volume and M key to unmute if MM is present under control bar.
Also you can go to System --> Preferences --> Sound and on Hardware tab and change the Profile (should be Analog Stereo Duplex or you can try something similar). In Output tab you can chose a device for sound output (if more than one option) and the Connector.

Good luck.

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then try to run gnome-alsamixer from menu Applications→Sound & Video GNOME Alsa Mixer

unmute and raise to a non zero values and retry.

Thanks marcobra (Marco Braida), that solved my question.

Changing Preferences->Sound->Hardware was a good idea but I found that it showed the recommended settings already. Installing gnome-alsamixer did the trick.

I had this same problem and followed Marco Braida's instructions. I had to put a check in front of the
SB LivAnalog/Digital Output Jack and then I had my sound back. Just a comment to possibly help someone else with the same problem.
