The issue seems to be this:

# ALSA Version
# ------------
#
# Driver version: 1.0.18a
# Library version: 1.0.20
# Utilities version: 1.0.20

Your ALSA driver and libraries are not the same version.

Please first follow this procedure:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

Then open a Terminal and copy-paste the following 2 commands into the Terminal::

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic

Then reboot and retest sound

Also make sure to choose the most recent Ubuntu kernel (something like kernel version 2.6.31-14-generic) in the grub boot menu. It is possible that you are still using the old kernel from Ubuntu 9.04...

After booting, you can open a terminal and execute the following command to see if the kernel version is set to 2.6.31-14:

uname -a

Ok.. Trying a few things. I'm using 2.6.29 So it's old. How do I update to the new one. It's not listed when I boot.
I'm running a dual boot with vista.

I'm trying the stuff you posted above. But I keep running into trouble in the terminal saying certain things are found.
This is becoming a big pain.

On top of no sound.. Anything that works with the camera will crashes and restart on it's own.
I also have no control on the touchpad.. I have to use a mouse.

Plus anything I click/or type the whole system is super slow... Very hard to do anything it takes time to go from one window to the next.. Why is this so much different then 9.04. (not that it was perfect..But most things worked fine) this is awful.

May I suggest this approach?

First back up all your personal data.

Then try installing Ubuntu 9.10 from a LiveCD session (instead of trying to upgrade). Choose custom partitioning and choose to keep your /home directory intact. Make sure the /home directory will not be formatted during the install.

This is how I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop and desktop. I never tried the upgrade approach for Ubuntu 9.10. Everything is still working fine on my pc.

Great... Just what I live to do..LOL.
Thanks for the help. and I will try that..

Will see how it goes.
might take a day or two..Depends on my time.. Guess I should have held off on the upgrade.

Well.. I got 9.10 on clean. First try said error. I just went and re did it..Formatted and it's on and I seem to have sound.. That's good..

Now the new trouble.. Doesn't see a WiFi card... So i'm in Vista right now. Anything I can do to make that work?

Thanks for the help.
