Not getting sound from DELL Inspiron 1440

The DELL Inspiron 1440 I bought on 17th October 2009 has two operating systems, Vista and Ubuntu 9.4. I get sound from Vista but not from Ubuntu. I've downloaded and installed sound and media players adaptable to Ubuntu and then also I couldn't get any sound. I'm new to Ubuntu and don't know to write programmes.

Some people have managed to get sound by updating ALSA (the underlying system to get sound) to latest version.
This may seem a little bit complicated :/

What kind of output do you want (analog/digital)? If you have problem with HDMI audio, try to follow this thread https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/385076. It helped to solve my problem (pennultuimate post).

Please execute step 1, then reboot and send us output from step 3 and step 4
