My install has alsa 1.0.20-2

Whats so different in 1.0.21? Ubuntu concentrates on what works rather than just getting the latest. You are free to add a PPA if the later version is so critical.

come on! this is a patch version so it will be more stable. specially it supports sound card of hp dv6 1225. i don't know about other models in hp dv6 series! so it will not break your unstable stability just change it.

here's change log: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Changes_v1.0.20_v1.0.21

then either compile it yourself or use this PPA

https://launchpad.net/~thefirstm/+archive/karmic-testing

yeah! we can compile kernel ourself, we can compile GNOME/KDE ourself. we can compile alsa ourself!

so what you want to do?
what if someone doesn't know such things?

I gave you a PPA! What more do you want. Sheesh

run:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

add these lines to the file:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/thefirstm/karmic-testing/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/thefirstm/karmic-testing/ubuntu karmic main

save the file, close gedit

now run:

gedit ~/key

copy and paste the below text into the file and save it:

-----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----
Version: SKS 1.0.10

save the new file and close gedit. Back in terminal run:

sudo apt-key add ~/key; rm ~/key; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

alsa 1.0.21 is now yours. If you'd ead my link instead of ranting you would have done all this yourself. Nevermind eh.

so you will do same for all people who have new sound cards? really good job! you stay here & tell them what they should do!

you guys suck! when you can simply add it to main distribution you don't then you will create a wiki page that describes how compile alsa or how you can install it from PPA. i'm talking about why it's like this! just think about someone even doesn't know what alsa is!

anyway just make your wiki page, i don't need your PPA

Newer hardware is hard to support due to most companies ploughing the majority of resources into supporting Windows due to the revenue it generates.

Adding PPAs and/or compiling stuff is sometimes needed to get what you want or need in Linux due to the nature of the OS and how companys support it (or not as the case may be) Creative are a classic here and people still buy their cards even though they struggle to support Windows effectively.

If you don't like the OS, don't use it. Nobody is forcing you.

I know this is a rant and I shouldn't get involved but why the harshness! 1.0.21 does have some advances that will help a lot of people but it does also break some systems because of its current instability the ppa is a good solution for now and as soon as the package is stable and has been tested It will be added in don't stop using Ubuntu just because it doesn't have the minor tweak you want installed as standard it will get there in the mean time if you really need it desperately try the wiki and if you get stuck ask questions but please don't slag the people who are trying to help off it just puts them off giving further help to people who need it and are prepared to try.

nice hint actionparsnip! so this is another job you have here! when people try to help & make things better you tell them go & don't use ubuntu! perfect! really perfect! that's why i said you SUCK.

i think this is enough, you don't want to help people. so do your job! make wiki page, say don't use ubuntu to others & ...

@blu i agree with you that it needs testing, but it's about a month that new alsa is released. i think it's enough for testing a patch version, so why it's not included? we don't include it because developers like actionparsnip have homework to do ( creating PPA )

damn!

Its not my job. I am a volunteer like many here on launchpad. I only got shitty due to your reply to my first post for which I apologize but you do now have a path to install what you need.

If you believe the newer alsa to be necessary submit it on http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/

The main Ubuntu repos may not have the latest and greatest which is why people make PPAs (BTW that is not my PPA and I do not have one either) There are thousands with people offering users access to packages they have created if you require them.

Hello,

I added the - https://launchpad.net/~thefirstm/+archive/karmic-testing repository to my system and
it helped my - Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop to play sound (sound didn't worked until know...)
but it brought with it a new problem, I can't play
any .avi files... but all the codecs are installed and it played very well untill I have added that repository.

I am using ubuntu karmic x64 release candidate

Please help :(

For those wondering why alsa 1.0.21 didn't get into 9.10, it is because of how a development cycle works in ubuntu: new packages get pulled into the development version until a certain date that is called feature freeze (that was august 27th). alsa 1.0.21 was released august 31st, therefore too late. While the new alsa may not have caused any breakage, it might also have been the opposite, and the goal of the final stage of development is to make the system as stable as possible with a certain set of packages, which by release date may not be the newest anymore. Therefore, if one prefers to try the new version nevertheless, one can compile it on ones own, wait for a ppa package to appear, or use a distribution that has a later release schedule (such as fedora) or other development approaches.

Can you help with this problem?
