Asked by xigen

AMD64, Delta66 audio card, ubuntu 9.10

Audio worked perfectly in 9.04 and fails upon upgrade.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure .. OK. Here we go.

1) Alsa upgrade -- check
2) terminal -- check
3) wget -O alsa-info.sh http://212.20.107.51/alsa-info.sh and bash alsa-info.sh --pastebin

5) yes... posted (above)

6) Experiment with the audio settings in gnome-alsamixer and asoundconf-gtk until you get sound (hopefully)
Tried it (* several times)
See: http://ubuntuforums.org/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=8074382

(hmmmm... strange)...
 wilson@wilson-desktop:~$ asoundconf-gtk
sh: /usr/bin/asoundconf: not found
You need to make sure asoundconf is active!
By default, asoundconf's configuration file is ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf
and must be included in ~/.asoundrc. Open this file to make sure it is!

7) ... check.
Make sure to set all channels to high volume levels in gnome-alsamixer. Make sure the different speakers (especially 'Front', 'Master', and 'PCM") are NOT muted and NOT set to low volume levels in gnome-alsamixer.

8) no sound -- speakers or headphones.

9) The sys boots to ubuntu only.

10) not sure how this works

11) theme = 'no sound'

12) same result -- no sound.

13) If you happen to have two sound-cards installed in your pc, one integrated into the motherboard and one inserted into a PCI slot, then try removing the PCI audio-card, reboot your pc and retest sound using only the motherboard's sound-chip.
hmmm .. I wanted to avoid that.
the sys worked just fine with 9.04

14) white box. AMD64

In your ALSA information script output, I see the following issue:

Simple mixer control 'ADC',0
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 163
  Mono: 0 [0%] [-99999.99dB]
Simple mixer control 'ADC',1

Simple mixer control 'ADC',2
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined

Simple mixer control 'ADC',3
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 163
  Mono: 0 [0%] [-99999.99dB]

Your ADC volume is at 0%. Please increase it to 77%

And this issue:

Simple mixer control 'DAC',2
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 127
  Mono: 0 [0%] [-99999.99dB]
Simple mixer control 'DAC',3
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 127
  Mono: 0 [0%] [-99999.99dB]

Your DAC volume is at 0%. Please increase it to 77%

In envy24control , alsamixer and gnome-alsamixer, you need to make sure that the ADC and DAC volume channels are set to 77% of maximum volume and that you don't have any of the channels muted in the mixer. Also go to the
command line and type in alsamixer and check that your levels are turned up there as well.

In gnome-alsamixer, you might need to click on "preferences" to be able to view any extra hidden volume channels. Maybe the DAC and ADC volume channels are hidden from view in your gnome-alsamixer panel.

Still - no sound.

when I boot up -- there is no sound.
when I run the command: speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6 -l1 -twav
it sounds beautiful

when I upgraded to 9.04 ... I had issues with hardware. Specifically Ubuntu needed to distinguish between onboard sound and my delta66 soundcard. I wonder if that is a factor in my current issue.

...

I went through
-- alsamixer
-- gnome-alsamixer
-- envy24control
and I turned up the settings on all 'multi' ** see screenshots

interesting..
I really have no idea if it is relevant to my issue.

My instructions were not followed correctly: there is a ; in front of the line

default-sample-channels = 6

The ; character means that the line is commented out and not active!

So OR you remove the ; in front that line or you add the following line to /etc/pulse/daemon.conf

default-sample-channels = 6

Then reboot and retest sound. If that does not help, then I think you are experiencing this annoying bug in pulseaudio:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/178442

In that case, I would recommend installing OSS4 to replace ALSA using this procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure#How%20to%20install%20an%20alternative%20audio%20system%20called%20OSS4%20(instead%20of%20ALSA)

Hmmm... Ooops!

default-sample-channels = 6 (* without the ; got it)

....

reboot.. check

Still no sound.

...

I think you are right - this is a nasty/annoying bug within Pulse Audio.

I will try your suggestion and install OSS4

As always - Thank you.
I appreciate all of your time and effort.

Does it work now using OSS4?

I am attempting to install oss4 -- however, still no sound.

Here is the process with results, and output from suggested diagnostic commands.

System --> Preferences --> Sound
I get: "Waiting for sound system to respond"

My attempt to fix the issue based on:
http://www.4front-tech.com/forum/vie...&t=3324#p13408

VLC ... works
Totem 2.28.1 .. does not work
Amarok 2.x ... does not work and sends me into a KDE config screen (below) where the choice I want (M-Audio Delta 66) appears and yet cannot be selected.

Try this procedure to first purge ALSA and then install OSS4:
