Asked by chintalvaady

Hi friends,

Today i upgraded my existing ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10.The upgrading process was smooth and i restarted the computer. But once i tried to play a MP3 file from VLC player.,There was no sound.I went to sound preferences and tried to change the settings ..,But there i realised that the newest beta version of ubuntu has not detected my sound card.

I also have similar problem with playing a VIDEO file. When i tried to play a AVI file from VLC player .,The operating system automatically logged out and the login screen appeared.

I know beta versions are prone to such bugs.,But im not an expert to solve it myself..,Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The reason why you get the following error "aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found..." is because your ALSA upgrade failed. The ALSA driver and library are NOT on the same version. Your ALSA information script log shows the following problem:

!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.18rc3
Library version: 1.0.20
Utilities version: 1.0.20

To solve this, please follow step 1 in the following procedure to upgrade ALSA to version 1.0.21:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Then reboot and retest sound. Make sure ALSA driver, library, and utilities are the same version AFTER upgrading ALSA. This is all described in the procedure.

If sound is still not working on the headphones or speakers after upgrading ALSA and rebooting, please proceed with the following procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Add these 3 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file and save the changes:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dell

If the 6stack-dell model option does not work, try each of the following model options one by one and reboot+retest sound after every change to the alsa-base.conf file:

 ALC883/888
   3stack-dig 3-jack with SPDIF I/O
   6stack-dig 6-jack digital with SPDIF I/O
   3stack-6ch 3-jack 6-channel
   3stack-6ch-dig 3-jack 6-channel with SPDIF I/O
6stack-dig-demo 6-jack digital for Intel demo board
acer Acer laptops (Travelmate 3012WTMi, Aspire 5600, etc)
   acer-aspire Acer Aspire 9810
   medion Medion Laptops
   medion-md2 Medion MD2
   targa-dig Targa/MSI
   targa-2ch-dig Targs/MSI with 2-channel
   laptop-eapd 3-jack with SPDIF I/O and EAPD (Clevo M540JE, M550JE)
   lenovo-101e Lenovo 101E
   lenovo-nb0763 Lenovo NB0763
   lenovo-ms7195-dig Lenovo MS7195
   lenovo-sky Lenovo Sky
   haier-w66 Haier W66
3stack-hp HP machines with 3stack (Lucknow, Samba boards)
   6stack-dell Dell machines with 6stack (Inspiron 530)
   mitac Mitac 8252D
   clevo-m720 Clevo M720 laptop series
   fujitsu-pi2515 Fujitsu AMILO Pi2515
   3stack-6ch-intel Intel DG33* boards
   auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

Step 3: Navigate to System/Preferences/Sound and change default mixer and playback device to HDA Intel (ALSA)

Step 4: Reboot pc and retest sound.

Step 5: Please make sure to test sound on both the internal speakers and headphones on ALL audio ports located on the back of your motherboard.
