Recording from microphone

The system is Ubuntu 9.04. Despite that I can hear the sound from microphone via speakers, I cannot record any sound from it to file or use it to communicate via VoIP application(Skype). When I type arecord > test.wav and then open the resulting file, Totem causes an error "Disconnected: OK".
