Microphone in Skype won't work.

Asked by John2

Hi all,

I have installed version 2.0.0.72 of Skype on Ubuntu 9.04 and, although I can listen to what other people say, it seems I cannot make myself heard from other people.

It is surely a matter of audio configuration (the microphone works just fine in Windows), but I am not sure what I should check and where.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you in advance.

If your microphone uses the sound card then get the latest Beta from the Skype site. It is much better at detecting the soundcard.

If, however, your is USB then DON'T get the beta! It gave my USB Internet telephone a hard time and I had to revert to a previous version.

The sound settings for Skype are IN Skype and not in the Computer sound Settings. Go Skye>S Button(bottom left)>Options>Sound Settings. In the past I have had to alter the settings for Sound In and Sound Out to the settings with "hw" in it, then it worked.

Thanks Arochester.

In the sound device list, I have 4 devices with HW in it:

HDA Intel (hw:intel,0)
HDA Intel (hw:intel,2)
HDA Intel (plughw:Intel,0)
HDA Intel (plughw:intel,2)

Now, I realize I could just do some tests and find the right one, but out of curiosity, what do those IDs mean?

Thanks again.

UPDATE: I have tried all of those devices and I hear in mono and the microphone won't work anyway.

Further suggestions would be highly appreciated.

By the way I have a Realtex AC268 device on my laptop. Would it be necessary to install the appropriate drivers?

Any suggestions about how to do it, as I have never done so?

Thank you.

Further update:

I have managed to capture some sound with the microphone after installing Pulseaudio and the beta version of Skype.

Cheers :-)
