Asked by williway

I'm new to ubuntu and have a new computer ASROCK A780GM-LE AIO motherboard with an AMD Phenom 9650 QUAD Core 2200mhz processed with 4 gb of RAM. The soundcard is an integrated NVIDIA. I have drivers but they are only good for Windows XP and Vista. My issue is that I cannot get any sound. I've checked connections, volumes etc but I think its a driver issue can anybody advise me if there is a Ubuntu driver for this or should I be trying something else? Thanks

Hi,

Your ALSA information script shows the following:

Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono: Playback 31 [100%] [0.00dB] [off]

[off] indicates that the Master volume is set to 100% but is muted. Please unmute the Master channel, Front and PCM channels using gnome-alsamixer.

After unmuting those channels, please retest sound on all headphone and line out jacks on the motherboard.

If sound is still not working, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Upgrade to ALSA 1.0.21 using this link:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

Then reboot and retest sound.

Step 2: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 3: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Add these 3 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file and save the changes:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel index=0,1 enable=1,0 model=6stack-dell probe_mask=1

If the 6stack-dell model option does not work, try each of the following model options one by one and reboot+retest sound after every change to the alsa-base.conf file:

 ALC883/888
   3stack-dig 3-jack with SPDIF I/O
   6stack-dig 6-jack digital with SPDIF I/O
   3stack-6ch 3-jack 6-channel
   3stack-6ch-dig 3-jack 6-channel with SPDIF I/O
6stack-dig-demo 6-jack digital for Intel demo board
acer Acer laptops (Travelmate 3012WTMi, Aspire 5600, etc)
   acer-aspire Acer Aspire 9810
   medion Medion Laptops
   medion-md2 Medion MD2
   targa-dig Targa/MSI
   targa-2ch-dig Targs/MSI with 2-channel
   laptop-eapd 3-jack with SPDIF I/O and EAPD (Clevo M540JE, M550JE)
   lenovo-101e Lenovo 101E
   lenovo-nb0763 Lenovo NB0763
   lenovo-ms7195-dig Lenovo MS7195
   lenovo-sky Lenovo Sky
   haier-w66 Haier W66
3stack-hp HP machines with 3stack (Lucknow, Samba boards)
   6stack-dell Dell machines with 6stack (Inspiron 530)
   mitac Mitac 8252D
   clevo-m720 Clevo M720 laptop series
   fujitsu-pi2515 Fujitsu AMILO Pi2515
   3stack-6ch-intel Intel DG33* boards
   auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

Step 4: Navigate to System/Preferences/Sound and change default mixer and playback device to HDA Intel (ALSA)

Step 5: Reboot pc and retest sound.

Step 6: Please make sure to test sound on both the internal speakers and headphones on ALL audio ports located on the back of your motherboard.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks Mark,

I muted the volume earlier and forgot to unmute it before running the commands you gave me. I also swapped speakers all works fine thanks
