Codec + Mixer: SigmaTel STAC9758,59 - Sigmatel® Soft Audio 6-channel AC97 revision 2.3 codec - STAC9758 - Intel ICH [Intel ICH5] - Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller [8086:24d5] (rev 02) - sound not working on Gateway 2000 M675 PRR in Ubuntu 9.04 - using ALSA Driver version 1.0.18rc3

Asked by DFire267

I have Ubuntu 9.04 running on my system, and I have done everything that a linux newbie can do to figure this out. I have looked at multiple forums and have tried to find the driver for download (stand-alone) to no avail... I just need the sound to work is all.

This is what the company describes my part as: Sigmatel® Soft Audio 6-channel AC97 revision 2.3 codec (STAC9758)

I would really appreciate help with this. I am on the road a lot and watching a movie every now and then would help my sanity a lot :)

First try upgrading ALSA to version 1.0.21 using this link:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

Then reboot and retest sound.

If that does not help, please try the solution from forumuser GreyGeek at the following location:

http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?p=394351&sid=ecaf639ac4322cbe0adc526843f84ae3

If the instructions are not helpful enough, I suggest installing Mandriva Linux One 2009 Spring with KDE4, so that you can more easily follow the instructions.

You can try various mixers to try to obtain the right mixer configuration.

Try installing gnome-alsamixer and/or kmix using Synaptic. If you prefer installing via the command line, the 2 commands would be:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer kmix

I think there is also an option in gnome-alsamixer to activate hidden mixer controls.

Hope it helps.

If you decide to install SimplyMEPIS 8.0 or Mandriva Linux One 2009 Spring with KDE4, I recommend first testing the sound during the LiveCD Session and only installing to harddisk if sound works.

I'm sorry to say, but all attempts to fix this problem have failed. I updated the ALSA Drivers and installed the particular programs tweeking with settings left and right. Nothing seems to work

I noticed it changed something. I'll see if it worked

Open gnome-alsamixer via the command-line.

In gnome-alsamixer, go to preferences and add the following channels so that they become visible in the gnome-alsamixer mixer list: Center and LFE

Once Center and LFE are visible in gnome-alsamixer, increase their volume to 100% to hopefully get sound through the speakers.

sorry, no dice. Is there any kind of other driver that I can find?

According to this link

http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2192

sound works if you set CENTER/LFE Jack to "Mixer Output".

Check gnome-alsamixer and alsamixer for this option.
