Codec: IDT 92HD71B7X - Mixer: Generic 10de ID 6 - STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog] Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:293e] (rev 03)- sound not working on HP HDX16t laptop in Ubuntu 9.04 - using ALSA driver v1.0.18rc3

Asked by ROB3RT

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition. I have an HP HDX16t... I've never been able to hear sound on it. So, lets go over the basics:
1. YES, the volume is turned on.
2. YES, I can hear sound on Windows Vista (Other current OS).
3. NO I could not find any drivers for the audio.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get sound on Ubuntu?
Thanks in advance!

I installed it, and it still didn't work, so I restarted. I still can't hear any sound. Yes, the sound is on.
Do you have any other suggestions?

You sent the output of this part of step 4:

cat /proc/asound/cards; sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer asoundconf-gtk alsa-utils flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound;

Please send us the rest of the output of step 4:

So the output of

asoundconf list; aplay -l; sudo lshw -C sound; ls -lart /dev/snd; cat /dev/sndstat; lspci -nn; sudo which alsactl; lsmod | grep snd

I would first like to gather enough info about your system. Once that is done, I can hopefully provide a solution.

Please try this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. and add these lines to the end of the file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4

3. Save the changes to the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

4. Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA

5. reboot and retest sound

6. If sound still does not work, then replace hp-m4 with one of the following 4 model options:

 STAC92HD71B*
   ref
   dell-m4-1
   dell-m4-2
   dell-m4-3

6. You will have to reboot and retest sound after every model option change to the alsa-base.conf file
