For the beginning you may try:
HDA intel (alsa mixer)
##this should give lots of options to (de)activate modules.

Options should be consistent, hence try setting everything to ALSA in
system preferences -> audio

This will use PulseAudio:
Capture : HDA Intel -STAC92XX Analog ( Pulse Audio)

Unmute at least master, pci, external amplifier
Details can be viewed not only via panel applet, this will open ALSA options in a terminal:
alsamixer

The GUI can be installed via Synaptic, package name:
gnome-alsamixer

##universe repository needs to be enabled

(3) Check to see if the ALSA driver for your sound card exists. Go to http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ and search for your sound card (chipset) manufacturer in the dropdown box. You'll be given a matrix of the sound cards made by the manufacturer. Try to match the chipset you found in step 2 with the driver(green hyperlink text).

Hi Romionet,

Your ALSA output shows the following problem:

# ALSA Version
# ------------
#
# Driver version: 1.0.20
# Library version: 1.0.20
# Utilities version: 1.0.18

ALSA Utilities version is still on version 1.0.18, but it should be the same version as the ALSA driver and library version.

Please follow step 1 from

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

to upgrade all 3 ALSA components to the same new driver version, which is v1.0.21

Step 1

!!! To avoid problems during the ALSA utils compilation and installation procedure, please make sure to stop ALSA with the following command BEFORE starting the ALSA upgrade procedure:

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop

!!! To avoid problems during the ALSA driver compilation and installation procedure, please make sure to replace the following line

sudo ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel --with-kernel=/usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)

with the following line in the ALSA driver compilation procedure:

sudo ./configure

Using these guidelines, please try upgrading the ALSA sound system to the newest version, then reboot and retest sound.

Here is the URL:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

If sound still does not work using ALSA v1.0.21, please try this procedure:

a) Open a terminal and edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as follows:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

When the file is open, add the following 4 lines to the end of the file after "options snd-pcsp index=-2"

options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4

b) Save change to file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf , reboot and retest sound

Regards,

Mark
