Please try the following procedure:

1. Physically remove the Ensoniq 5880B [AudioPCI] (rev 02) soundcard from your pc
2. Follow the procedure below to test sound from the on-board soundchip (on the motherboard):

Hi Mark

My on-board soundchip works just fine on ubuntu. The thing is that i want to use the Ensoniq 5880B [AudioPCI] sound card. It's strange that it doesn't work because it was working before on the same ubuntu version (9.04). The problem appeared after upgraded my haedware (mobo, cpu, ram and video card). That is what makes me believe it's not an ''alsa'' problem. But from my experience from launchpad lot of people face sound problems on ubuntu.

Have you tried putting the Ensoniq into another PCI slot on your motherboard? Maybe - just maybe - during the hardware upgrade, the Ensoniq was inserted into the "wrong" PCI slot, that does not allow it to be detected in Ubuntu...

And make sure to disable the on-board soundchip via the BIOS, before testing the Ensoniq.

I don't think this is the problem because it is detected in Windows and works too. Mark i read your answers on other familiar questions and it seems you are ''guru'' in sound problems. Have you ever come across a problem like mine? Any ideas of what goes wrong in my case? Hopefully i always have the option of the on-board soundcard
