Skype no sound 8.04

Asked by Icey1174

I just installed Skype on my 8.04. I was going to set up my account and get the webcam tomorrow. I have my account set up without a problem, but I get no sound at all from Skype. I have read some of these other posts but with no help. My sounds works for everything else but Skype. I am completely up to date with with all updates. One update required me to use my 8.10 CD. I still use 8.04.

I figured I could get everything ready to go and just plug in the webcam tomorrow, but it looks like it might not be that easy.

Thanks for any help!

The sound settings for Skype are in Skype and not in the computer sound settings. Open Skype>S button (bottom left) > Options> Sound Devices. Mine didn't work until I changed to the option with "hw" in it.

Depending what hardware you intend to use with Skype it might be better to get the Beta from the Skype website. It irons out a few problems with a headset, or headphones and a mic, where sound comes from the soundcard. I don't think they have made things better for my USB Internet phone, which worked better previously, where sound was accessed through USB.

So have a play about with the settings and try a test call.

Beware webcams. Some are more Linux friendly than others.

Mine only has one setting "PulseAudio server (local)." I cannot change it to anything else. I did download the beta version, that is the only one they let you download. Do I have a bad install???

Thanks again!
