no codecs found - Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) - Sound not working on Dell XPS 400 computer in Ubuntu 9.04 due to ALSA error "hda-intel: no codecs found" - using ALSA driver 1.0.18rc3

Asked by amrodosevich

I have a Dell XPS 400 computer with the Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller. And after I installed Ubuntu the sound no longer works – I’ve gone through several forms and can’t seem to find the solution… Any help would be great!

Please first upgrade ALSA to version 1.0.21 using this link:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

After upgrading ALSA, please reboot and retest sound on both speakers and headphones.

If sound still does not work after upgrading ALSA and rebooting, then please try the suggestion from Everthon Valadão at this location:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/201518

If that does not help either, it might be a Linux kernel specific bug. In that case, only a kernel downgrade or upgrade can solve the issue....

I think these ALSA issues point to a bad install of Ubuntu 9.04 or a version of the Linux kernel that is not compatible with your audio chipset. Still a very strange issue.

First test sound using an Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD. If that works, install Ubuntu 8.10 from the LiveCD session. If that LiveCD cannot produce working sound, then you will need to test sound in LiveCD's from other distributions, like Fedora, Mandriva, etc....

The kernel and ALSA drivers on your pc seem to be correctly installed and are all the latest versions. So no issue with the installation now.

But the ALSA output is still showing the following error:

ALSA hda_intel.c:2509: no codecs found!

So Ubuntu 9.04 and Ubuntu 9.10 unfortunately seem to be incompatible with your soundcard. Strange....

The best advice I can give you now, is to test sound in different LiveCD's (Mandriva 2010 LiveCD, Fedora LiveCD, MEPIS LiveCD, PCLinuxOS LiveCD) until you encounter a LiveCD session where sound is working out-of-the-box.

Can you help with this problem?
