headphone jack has no sound

Alright, so i installed ubuntu on my comp the other day, and i am having a minor issue with my headphone jack. The speakers on my laptop are producing sound, but when i go to hook up my headphones i am baffled by the fact that i cannot hear anything out of them. I know nothing is muted because i can hear the music out of my speakers what should i do?

Brilliant, nicely done :))

The guide was put together by Mark Rijckenberg so the credit for solving this doesn't really belong to me. You are the one that worked through the guide and found the answer so i guess the credit shuld be yours.

What did fix the problem in the end? Can you give us a brief idea?
