no sound on media player

just installed ubuntu 9.04 .. new to this.. getting no sound from media player.. picture ok

inastall updates or use kaffeine player one of good player include most of plugins and video player

Hi :)

Check the icon by the calendar on the top taskbar. Check the Volume Control as that leads to a sound mixer and sometimes one of the channels hidden in "Preferences" might be set too low. I also find that wobbling the PCM & Front channels sometimes seems to unstick the sound. Watch out tho because it can suddenly leap into life at that point! Also check the speakers are plugged into the right socket on the machine. It should be one of the green sockets.

Personnally i much prefer MPlayer to Kaffeine. It avoids a whole shed load of dependencies. Err, this guide might help with looking up odd terms and different programs
